8 students. 1 week in Romania. And a strong passion for contemporary theatre.

A week spent in Iaşi; exploring the form and culture of international performance.

The project

International Performance Module: a project that is run as part of the Theatre and Performance undergraduate degree at the Arden School of Theatre.

This project will give us an introduction to the concept of international performance, and over the course of 6 weeks we will explore the form and style that international performance takes as we learn about social, cultural and political context of the work we make and the country we will be visiting: Romania.

We will spend 6 days in Iași, which is situated in the far East of Romania, near the Moldavian border. The trip will consist of visits to the theatre, leading workshops with Romanian students, performing a devised show and many more exciting things. Over the course of the next 6 weeks I will be reflecting on my experiences and documenting my journey through a creative blog on here!

What is International Performance?

In its simplest terms, international performance is a form of performance that broadens across geographical boundaries and cultural divides, it uses theatre as a tool to connect cultures, languages and communities. It often discuses themes of social, cultural and political issues and it can be a way of conveying emotions, cultural expressions and stories to share with a multitude of individuals.
